in the morning- Lyrics

All songs by Phil Poirier © 2010

Disturbance

I saw her do the hustle
Down at the Parkside with a song
Muscling into that spotlight
Like she’d been there all along

She sidled slowly to me
A siren sound in my head
Told me to grab my belongings and scatter
‘Cause this one could kill you dead.

She was a disturbance
She was a disturbance oh

At first it didn’t dawn on me
I was a fly trapped in a web
Then she wrapped her arms around me
And the gin went to my head

The first thing that she told me
Was she was a pretty good judge of men
She proceeded to measure my prospects
I been in the dark since then

CHORUS
She was a disturbance
She was a disturbance
She was a disturbance oh
Of a kind I’ve never known
And I wasn’t certain
That I could find my way back home
She was a disturbance

Now I’m feelin better
I think I’ll be alright
But I see her dark imperfection
And the day turns into night

Took a long time to admit it
But I see now and it’s no surprise
She was just playin’ my heartstrings
She was slipping my soul on for size

Goddess Moon

What is this now
That I hear
That somehow now you decide
So solemn in your words
So settled in your mind

Oceans rush down over me
I’m rolling in with the tide
Longing for your voice
I settle for your lies

Goddess of night
Moon like a fire in the sky
Twilight bleeds to darkness
In your eye

I hate to seem bitter
Standing on the shore
Hell’s freezing over
Winter’s at the door

Burning in the sunlight
Lost in the woods
Chances of survival
Probably not so good

Faced with its demise
Given half a chance
The body goes on living
Soul goes into trance

But I’ve not got far to go
No I’ve not got far to go

Goddess of night
Moon like a fire in the sky
Twilight bleeds to darkness
In your eye

I hate to seem bitter
Standing on the shore
Hell’s freezing over
Winter’s at the door

But I’ve not got far to go
No I’ve not got far to go

Running out of numbers
I can’t seem to quit
These pieces of the puzzle
That finally seem to fit

You say you saw it coming
So strange you can’t recall
Just what was all that fuss
About the writing on the wall

But I’ve not got far to go
Yeah I’ve not got far to go

Goddess of night
Moon like a fire in the sky
Twilight bleeds to darkness
In your eye

Don’t Saddle that Horse

Riding in the rain and the darkness
Shadows by the side of the road
I wonder how’d I end up in this mess
Just waiting for the night to explode

Never had a better excuse
You get used to taking abuse
Now I know you will not give in so I go

CHORUS
Well you said oh
Don’t travel that course tonight
Oh no no, you don’t wanna saddle that horse
Tonight

Light puddles up in my footsteps
Sounds of a rumbling cloud
Racing my thoughts to your doorstep
Denial seems to follow the crowd

I can see your face through the glass
I linger til the chill wins at last
I wanna be a hero but I’m not and I know

CHORUS

My Imagination is hungry
Though it’s got something awful to chew
Seems it’s always been feast or famine
Starved on recollections of you

All these memories flooding back from the past
Finally come to haunt me at last
Guess I’ll be like Noah and go with the flow

As Far As I Know

As far as I know
I been staying out of trouble
Ridin the curve
Leaning on the bubble

CHORUS
But if there’s one thing
I must say
It’s that the problems
that you have won’t stay
So won’t you give em up
for just this day
You’ll see
As far as I know
As far as I know

As often as I’m wrong
You’d think I’d learn to spot it
Though now I go along
Used to be I fought it

CHORUS

I’m travelin a road
Goin’ back to where I started
Unraveling the code
Showin’ where my heart is

So Simple

Didn’t you just tell me it’s over?
Didn’t we just fall through the roof?
You run through the rooms
Where you keep all the omens

You calibrate reaction to actions
But one and one is not making two
The sun and the moon
The star in the circle
Protecting you

CHORUS
It’s so simple
but you run in the dark
so simple
you are the spark
It’s all in
What you’re living for
Yes I know, I know
It’s hard to be the one
I know I know
The solitary sun

You’re runnin’ to redemption on empty
You wanna say it’s coming to suit
You best to be truthful
To return to the roots

BRIDGE
It’s a searchlight
Flooding the dark
It’s a soundbite
Sweetened and tart

CHORUS
It’s so simple
but you run in the dark
so simple
you are the spark
It’s all in
What you’re living for
Yes I know, I know
It’s hard out on your own
I know I know
The silence of the stone
so simple
so simple
It’s a searchlight
It’s a soundbite
so simple
so simple
so simple

Too Hard

He’s been a long time gone
To a place that he knows that he has to forget
He’s comin back home
to the thought of your love

Did the silence he thought
he could hear in your letters
Change your mind
Make you hide all the feelings you’d show

CHORUS
That it was too hard
And you were so lonely
Knew it was wrong from the start
Shoulda said no

And now the sad part
Touching a wound that he couldn’t expect
But the key to his heart
Is still yours alone

But aside form the fact that
he thought you would follow
Criticize him for not asking what he don’t know
What he don’t know
What he don’t know

CHORUS
That it was too hard
And you were so lonely
Knew it was wrong from the start
Shoulda said no

Take his hands
and the tears when you’re asking forgiveness
Tell him he is the one
that you trust with your soul

Gold Meadow Flower

In the morning
I could see my soul
In the soft light
Of a meadow gold

As it rose above me
A whitethroat called out my name
And though I’d been sleeping
I was awake again

In a harsh light
I used to see my sins
Through a dark lens
Burning through my skin

But I bit of the sunlight
Sweet juice ran to the ground
Out of the dungeon
Gaining back sight and sound

CHORUS
Well if I could have my way, well
Then the bible’d say no more
Of fallen apples
No caveat of fruit -
Instead a knowledge
That would suit me to the core

I’d fly down the meadow
I’d fall down in my place
Angels in dewdrops
Sweetgrass would strum my face

Liar

We met at a stoplight
I thought it was green
You promised to go right
I was left at the scene

We started down this highway
When I accidentally brought myself too near you
Then you grabbed the wheel
And said you needed my assurance to be sure
That I’d see you
See you

You finally got your foot in the door
Then you turned around trying to ignore me
Was it something I said before
When I looked in your eyes and saw a small warning
You often call me late at night to tell me that I’m dying to be near you
I tell you that I’m doubtful
Then you say that there is nothing more to fear
Should I fear you
Fear you

CHORUS
Oh, you liar
Who comes when you call
Who calls when you’re coming apart
And you need some of that
Sweet love and kindness
You know there’s always a cost
Cause when you’re looking at me that way I’m blinded
And I can’t find my way
Find my way home

Stolen Apple

Just like in an elevator
Doors come open for you
Mucked up in a tidal zone
I got grit in my shoe
But you know there’s never ever
Been a thing you could ever do wrong
And the saints and the sun when they see you
They break into song

CHORUS
They sing
She likes to dally when she’s given her lead
She bites the devil then she spits out the seed
Stolen apple
You know it’s good for you
Shiny bright apple
The perfect fruit for two
That’s what they told me
Down in the garden
Back when we got along
They said what doesn’t kill me now’s
Only making me strong

You act a lot like Aphrodite
You’re the star of the show
I’m stuck on a river bend
Running deep but too slow
Cause when it comes down to tempting my fate
You know that you’re the MC
And my lovely parting gift is a
Full year’s supply of your grief

You sing
“I like to dally when I’m given my lead
I bite the devil then I spit out the seed”
Stolen apple
You know it’s good for you
Shiny bright apple
The perfect fruit for two
That’s what they told me
Down in the garden
Back when we got along
They said that what doesn’t kill me now’s
Only making me strong

Sad Song

This is a sad song
Like an overnight flight
When you long to be home
And it’s a bad sight
The runway lights
Carry you away

Been so long
We fought the good fight
To prove who’s wrong
You throw stones
Chunks of my pride
And all the baggage that I own

CHORUS

Oh I never thought
I would be
One of those guys who gives up
But I can see
You’re not alone in the dark
Waiting for me, waiting for me

CHORUS
So sister stay and lock the door
We both know what we came for
I know there’s somewhere else
You’d rather be
Close your eyes
We’ll slip into darkness
And the comfort of night

Wish I was home
Lost in the crowd
Trying to catch some rest

But sleep won’t come
Stuck miles up
Head among in the clouds

CHORUS

Hard Fight

Seems such a pity
We gave up and went along
Shattered darkened cities
We close our eyes and sing a song

CHORUS
Headed for a hard fight
Going it alone
Gonna be a long time harvesting
the seeds we’ve sown

With falling icon towers
We gave way to fear
With ribbons on our bumpers
We send them back despite the tears

CHORUS

Doesn’t really matter
We can’t find the door
Friends already scattered
We don’t listen anymore

CHORUS

Shining beacon nation
Supposed to lead the way
Worried no one follows
But we haven’t much to say

CHORUS

Minimum force

What’s the force it takes
To turn our backs to Truth
What’s it take for us
To make this world anew
What’s the force it takes
To make our dreams go begging
To send Noah’s army arcing two by two

What’s the force It takes
To turn us back to love
What’s the sign we need
To come from up above
What’s the force it takes
To help us all do better
We all stumble when we know
Push comes to shove

Little Buddha babies bump an
Evolutionary knee
Sit and judge
The fruit falling
Farthest from the tree
Boy with a bottle
Flashing bugs are everywhere
Loosened up the lid and
Let em have a little air
Hiding from the truth
Drilling to the bone
Suckling at the breast of Mother Nature
When we’re grown

It’s important
It’s important
To find a minimum force

Cause
It’s not about savin’ and it’s not about God
Or keeping the world flinching
At the sounding of the rod
Fightin’ for a piece
Snuggling into war
While all of the warning signals
Rise in pitch into a roar
Go by the book
Go mow the lawn
Tune into the tube
Until it turns into a yawn

It’s important
It’s important
To find a minimum force

What’s the minimum force it takes
To turn us back to Truth
What’s it take for us
To make this world anew
What’s the minimum force it takes
To make your dreams go begging
To send Noah’s army arcing two by two

What’s the minimum force?
